We are huge Disney fans in our home and our boys eagerly await their animated movie debuts.  Recently, my older son has been hounding me about the release of Disney Pixar's Brave* this month.  It excited me that he would be so eager about watching an animated movie about a rebellious and strong female protagonist.  As a parent, I work very hard to impart equality between the genders to my children and I love that Disney has created a strong female character in this film.     The story is set in the magical Highlands of Scotland and follows the heroic journey of a strong-willed and adventurous female protagonist named Merida.  Due to frustrations with predisposed gender expectations, she is determined to forge her own path in live and to venture out on her own to find the true meaning of bravery.  She goes against the grain when it comes to cultural traditions and defies an age-old custom to prove that bravery comes from within and is not pre-determined by gender.     We had the … [Read more...]
