How Do The Dads In Your Life Go Above And Beyond? #FaTHURSday @PhilipsNorelco #Ad

Every morning, the alarm clock goes off at exactly 2:45 A.M. and my husband dutifully gets up and heads out to provide for our family.  As he is getting ready, we are all sleeping and he silently goes through the motions to get dressed and embark on what is often a twelve-hour plus workday.  Even when he is sick or exhausted, you will never hear him complain or lament over the fact that he has to do these things for his family.     Despite the fact that he is always working, he somehow manages to find the time to attend every single basketball game that our son plays in.  Also, he makes sure that he is present at every graduation, awards ceremony, and birthday celebration that we have ever had for either one of our boys.  Some might say that these sacrifices are innovative but, as far as he is concerned, this is what every father is supposed to do in order to go above and beyond for his children and his family.     Everyone thinks their dad does something innovative and this … [Read more...]

Are You That Father?

As a Literacy teacher, I am always prepared for literature that we read in class to elicit feelings in my students due to connections that they make to what the characters in the book are going through.  We are currently reading a book about four children who were abandoned by their parents and the events caused one of my students to have a very emotional reaction.     We were having a class discussion about the chapter we had just read and I asked if it was realistic to say that losing a parent early on has a profound impact on a person's life long-term.  One of my male students raised his hand and stated that if his father died it would not affect him at all because his father was never there for him and walked out when he was little.  He then proceeded to sob uncontrollably to the point that I had to stop the lesson to comfort him.     As I reflect on this experience, I can't help but think how familiar this story is in most of my students' cases.  Many of them come from … [Read more...]

Parenting From A Dad’s Point Of View! #HuggiesLatino

Most mothers have absolutely no problem articulating what some of the challenges of being a parent are.  They will brag about their beautiful children and sing their praises but they will also tell you that parenting can be stressful and messy at times too.     Now dads, on the other hand, also have their own point of view on the joys of parenthood but we rarely get to hear their take on being a parent or how they cope with the difficulties involved in raising children.     Now my husband always has an opinion on everything and is the best father I know so, who better to interview to get the dads point of view on parenting?  After much coaxing, he finally agreed to answer some of my questions and I am very excited to share his responses with all of you here:   -What are your tips for new dads? "Never lose patience.  There will always be an accident, a mess, something you don't know yet and you will learn everything you need to know as you go.  Parenting will get … [Read more...]
