Father’s Day is right around the corner and I have found myself reflecting a lot on the qualities that define what a good father is. If you think about it, being a dad is not an easy job. It involves always being in mom’s shadow and the truth is that fathers also play an integral role in the nurturing and development of their children. Many fathers question whether they are doing a good job or not and, if you asked their children, they would probably say that they have the best fathers in the whole world!
I’ve been very fortunate in my life to be able to witness firsthand some of the best fathers in the world with the men in my own family. Watching them over the years has allowed me see that any doubts that they might have about their parenting were completely unfounded. Here are some of the lessons that they have imparted to me and to those around them about the qualities that define a good father. So, without further ado, here it is…
- A good father puts the needs of his children ahead of his own and makes sacrifices in order to fulfill those needs.
- Fathers are heroes to their children and make them feel protected at all times, no matter what.
- Good fathers treat the mothers of their children with love and respect in order to model how women should be treated at all times.
- Dads are nurturers just like moms are and they demonstrate their love for their children through their affection whenever they can.
- Good fathers stand by their families when times are good and when they are not so good.

I don’t have a dad but my husband is a wonderful father to our 3 (soon to be 4) kids. He works very hard and spends all his free time with us. He’ll sacrifice himself for our happiness and I’m grateful to him everyday.

I have a cousin who is a single parent.
She’s a terrific mom and doesn’t give herself credit for this.

My son in law is an awesome father to my 2 grandsons. He works hard long days and still finds time to play with them and teach them.

I know many wonderful fathers these days who rather than acting like they are “helping out mom” are fully engaged with their kids because they WANT to be.

I think a good father is one that is there for his kids. Supports them, encourages them, spends time with them.
My husband is a great dad. He loves taking the kids outdoors and to all their events.
My husband is a wonderful father! Now that our daughters are grown, his duties as a father are not over and he shows that to my daughters every day. He helps them in any way he can, and he also is an excellent grandfather to our grandsons.
A good Dad is loyal and supportive of his kids. My Dad did a great job in being the sole provider for a family of eight when I was growing up. He went to work every day and helped us with whatever we needed. I have always told him thank you so much for what he has done for me, and thank him for all of his support and love over the years. My Dad is 84 years old!

My dad has been a great father, grandfather and now great-grandfather. He never gets tired of helping everyone in the family with whatever they need.
Besides my husband, who is a great Dad, I also admire my brother. He’s a Dad to 7 kids and he’s super wonderful with all of them. He’s really a inspiration.

I think my dad was a better father then he even thought he was. He raised 5 children and continued to help all of us as much as he could even when we were out of the house and married. When we had children, he took our children out and entertained them also even when he was in his 80’s.
I’m not a shallow person but for me being a good father is a little more than him putting his family first.
– Helping out with changes/feeding/homework etc without being asked to
– Even though he may have been at work all day 5 days a week, still have consideration for the mom who has been at home looking after the kids all day
– Being considerate to the mother
– Caring, selfless and willing to do anything possible to provide for his family
I actually think that almost every parent is doing a better job than they think they are…everyone doubts their parenting abilities on occasion.
I have a friend who is a single parent and she is always doing things with her children. I think spending time making memories is the best thing you can do for your children.
I think a good father takes care of his children, is welcoming and doesn’t see mom being away as “babysitting” since they’RE HIS kids too!
My brother is doing a superb job raising his kids. He is the type of Dad that I wish everyone had. He has wonderful kids.

My older brother who is currently a Dad of one but expecting a second is #Doingood. I think he is an amazing Father to his daughter and will be a great Father to this new baby as well. He is very hands on, loves spending time with his family and loves being a Dad.

My friend Nate is doing a much better job of being a good dad than he thinks — he has to work long hours and travel a lot, which he feels guilty about constantly, but he still manages to make it to all of his kids’ events and spends all of his free time with them.
Sounds like a great dad to me! I did not have a good dad so when I hear men stepping up to the plate and taking the father role I am happy for the kids.
it’s kind of the opposite. I know people that THINK they are good parents and they really suck. but the person YOUR talking about is probably me. I am WAY too hard on myself, when deep down I think I am a good parent !:)

My definition of a good father includes time with the family and passing on values and life lessons. Funny that those who think are not doing a good job are the ones

I agree with your definition of a good Dad. My own Dad was great. I have a friend who is a wonderful Dad–most of the men in my family and my friends all are or were great Dads.
My dad is doing a good job. He lost his wife/my mom 3 years ago to breast cancer.. He still works hard and smiles often.
I am always amazed at a single parent. Sometimes they don’t give themselves enough credit. They usually work twice as hard to make their family run smoothly.
My nephew is always saying how he doesn’t have the money to buy fancy things for his little girl. But he’s working two jobs so his wife can stay home with the baby, they have a decent house and he’s smart enough to drop by my house before shopping so I can load him up with coupons. I give him a lot of credit for his hustle.
I try to always have some type of “leftovers” on hand when I know he’ll be stopping by.

My husband is a great dad, we have four girls ages 5 – 21 and he always made and makes time for them from everything to arts & crafts and tea parties to driving lessons and playing video games. Our youngest also has medical problems and we are constantly in the hospital with her.

He works very hard to provide for all of us and puts our needs first. Our kids are almost grown and we are trying to make as many memories as possible.
