As I’m planning my son’s First Communion party in a couple of weeks, I find myself feeling nostalgic and reminiscing about when I was his age and I celebrated this sacrament with my parents and family. Being a parent certainly forces you to take many trips down memory lane as you experience milestones and rites of passage with your own children that you went through yourself.
I can recall what a wonderful day it was and how much fun we all had together. My parents had a party for me at a Spanish restaurant and I can still smell all of the delicious foods and hear the music that they played during the party. The adults all sat around the table and talked while the kids danced around and played all around them. This is exactly the image that I plan to see during my son’s celebration next month, a happy smiling face like the one I used to have when I was a little girl.
My experience has been that, many times, scents and images will be the sparks that catapult you back to a certain memory or event. For me, the scents of perfumes and the movies and television shows that I watched growing up immediately transport my imagination to another time. There are memories of staying up late during vacations from school and watching our favorite movies as a family. These are exactly the kind of family memories that I want to create with my own children.
I love that Netflix gives me access to many of my favorite movie and television titles from my youth. It’s always easy to watch the shows that defined many of the stages of my development from childhood and adolescence all the way through to adulthood. There is nothing quite like the feeling of taking a stroll down memory lane!
Here are my favorite Blasts From The Past on Netflix:
Childhood Years: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Tween Years: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Teen Years: Dirty Dancing
The best part is that now I get to share many of those feel-good memories with my boys and they can have a lens into who their mom was when she was a kid!
Let’s Discuss: What are some of your favorite movies and television shows that remind you of your childhood?

I remember I was obsessed with Scooby Doo as a kid, then I moved on to The Dukes of Hazard and later 90210. Movies that stand out are the classics with Cary Grant (he was my favorite actor-my mom loved old films so I became hooked), When I was a young teen I watched Heathers and Gleaming the Cube literally every day after school on VHS.
I loved the Wonder Years! My kids like some of those old shows, so it would be fun to watch something like that with them!
We actually JUST watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Netflix about 3 weeks ago. Can you believe I had never seen it? My husband was appalled when I told him and we watched it immediately lol 🙂
The Sound of Music. My Mom loved this movie and we watched it so many times when I was growing up.
Dirty Dancing was one of my favorite movies ever. I sure do miss watching shows like that.
my favorite movie of all time is gone with the wind…its a classic
I really enjoyed watching the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. I liked all the special characters like Dudley DoRight and Boris and Natasha.
I loved watching Punky Brewster. My scariest episode was when she got stuck in the refrigerator!
Super hard to pick a favorite, but I am a big horror movie buff, so Nightmare on Elm Street were my favorite movies when I was younger! 🙂
My daughter likes to watch Full House. It brings back so many memories of growing up! I love Netflix!
We recently watched Adventures in Babysitting with our kids. We have also enjoyed sharing the Back to the Future movies with them too. Its so funny to see all their reactions! Especially to movies where “the phones have cords?!?!” attached. lol. – alice chase
Such a nice look into the past, still love Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and watch it over and over again. Remember the time when it first came out.

It is so fun looking through old pictures 🙂 When we first got Netflix I started introducing my kids to all the shows I watched as a kid. Now they are huge fans
I love seeing these old pictures! It’s so cool that Netflix has so many older movies and tv shows now. It really brings out the nostalgic in me.
We have netflix and I found the old cartoon Robin Hood the other day and my two year old keeps asking for it! I wish they had more old disney movies on Netflix!
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! I haven’t thought of that movie in years. I need to show it to my kids!
Dirty Dancing brings back memories. My babysitter when I was little loved that movie and we watched it daily for almost an entire summer. lol. Good times!

We LOVE Netflix! Such a great and wide variety of movies they offer!
I love watching Saved By the Bell on Saturday mornings with my sister. It brings lots of memories back.
I think my youngest would probably pack his bags to leave home if we got rid of his Netflix. At the age of 4 he can find all o this shows – I of course love that I can lock it down to keep him from seeing the things he should not.
I remember my aunt taking my sister and I to see Mary Poppins. We all loved it and sang the songs over and over.

I adored Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as a kid… and still do as an adult. I watch it whenever possible! I’m really enjoying Netflix streaming as are my kids! (I’m offering a giveaway also where I’m giving people credit for entering giveaways like yours so if #StreamTeam is in your tweets, hopefully you’ll see some of my people stop by!)
I recently found *Humanoids From the Deep* on Netflix and laughed out loud. That was the first ‘grown-up’ movie my brother and I ever saw (our parents didn’t know!). It was the first time we ever saw boobs on TV! 🙂
These pictures are great. I agree w/you about scents. I passed a candle in the store that I loved the scent and I brought it home even though it was not priced low. I just loved it. Hubby said, ‘that smells like old ladies in church,’ hahahaa and he was RIGHT that’s what it reminded me of, my childhood church. 🙂 I still like the candle, hubby though, not so much because it doesn’t bring about nostalgic value to him. 🙂 Netflix is big in my oldest son’s house, he and his wife love it.
Saved by the Bell! I remember watching it every weekend, and I would watch all the reruns.
I loved Roger Rabbit too! My favorite show growing up was Jem & The Holograms

Golden Girls definitely reminds me of my childhood — I still remember staying home on a Saturday night to watch it with my mom and sister, and I loved how risque and “adult” the humor was (and still do!).

Okay, well, interestingly, we did not have a television when I was a child. My parents did not think TV was a good influence. So I can remember teachers telling us to watch something on TV and I’d have to bring a note to school from my mom explaining that we did not believe in TV. That said, we would try to sneak to a neighbor’s house to watch The Monkees.
I used to watch looney tunes so much! This reminds me of my childhood.
I’ve noticed my kids watching Garfield which is a show that I watched all the time on TV growing up. It was one of my favorites and I’m surprised that my kids enjoy it just as much.
