This past weekend, my son’s basketball team had a home game on Sunday. When he returned, he shared with me that one of his teammates did not attend the game because he went skiing.
We have been considering taking our boys skiing for a long time and it really got me thinking about some of the safety concerns that I have about taking our kids to ski for the first time. After all, like any sport or activity, children need to be taught safety when it comes to heading out on the slopes.
I think most parents’ number one concern when kids head out skiing or snowboarding is on-hill safety. Fortunately, Snowlink.com has worked with the National Ski Patrol to help parents’ start a dialogue with kids and review the do’s and don’ts when hitting the slopes with the Safety IQ Test.
As a parent, it puts me more at ease to know that the issue of teaching kids ski safety is such a priority for those in the industry. While being snow smart is essential, a lesson from a professional is even more important. Snowlink.com has also created a great tool for locating ski schools and snowboard schools across the country.
Each season, SIA collects the most current information and resources for all things SNOW, helping consumers improve their skill level, locate equipment and the latest in snow sports fashion on Snowlink.com.
Here are some additional features for kids and parents to explore:
Kids Zone– A great resource for websites and links to programs that help get kids out on the slopes.
Goggle Gap– The space between your helmet and goggles, or Goggle Gap, can be exposed due to a poor-fitting helmet and goggle system, becoming severely sunburned, chapped by the wind or frostbit. Learn how to “erase the space” here.
Let’s Discuss: Have you ever taken your kids skiing and how did you teach them to be safe before they hit the slopes?

I have never been sking before but I have been snowsledding, which was a lot of fun. I want to take my kiddos to the snow next year.
I have never been skiing I dont think I will either considering the fact that I am terrified of what could happen but I will share this with friends that do go!
I tried skiing on a beginners slope ONCE–I did not fall-but ended up keeping my eyes shut the entire time-you’d have thought I was on a massive hill instead of the slight slope it really was!! Needless to say I decided NOT to attempt that again and I have no kids so at least I won’t frighten them with my fears!!
I tried to take my oldest skiing, but honestly – my kids aren’t the type of kids that like to be outside in the cold for extended periods of time. They prefer snow tubing for maybe an hour at a time.
I have never been skiing, but would love to take the entire family. I think this would be such a fun experience to see snow, get some excercise, and vacation.
That’s the one thing we have never done just yet. I think I will freeze outside lol.
I, myself have never been skiing, so I have no idea what I’d first teach my children about Skiing… I’d probably leave it up to the professionals!
I haven’t ever gone skiing yet. I think I’d like to one day.
It has been a while since I even saw snow but I find this information very informative. I live in the south but used to live in the snow belt
I am not a ski person nor have the desire because I don’t like to be cold but I can see the value of this for people who do love the sport.
we don’t ski here in FL but these are great tips for those who do ski on keeing your kids safe
Skiing is a big sport in our area. Although Ih ave never been, the husband has. I know the kids would love to go when they get a little older. This is helpful to ensure they have all the safety tips they need.
we live a few miles from bittersweet ski resort in Michigan but I have not been able to go do to my own health issues and the cost of it all. meaning the gear not so much the cost of skiing it sure looks like a lot of fun.
We have never been skiing, but my nieces go a lot. They have been injured, luckily not badly, a few times. I would definitely look into ski safety before I went.
I’ve not been skiing in quite some time, and I’ve never taken my son. Seems I need to remedy that!
Finland is a big winter sport country, so I grew up sking. Mostly cross country but also slalom and snowboarding later on. It’s all a lot of fun. Just can’t stand the cold, lol
This is most likely a must for every parent who lives during the season of snow – it’s always better to teach children its ways on that one for safety.
such a peace of mind to have these safety help. can’t wait to take the munchkins!
This is fantastic! No kids here, but safety in the snow is very important!
It looks like I am going to get to use these tips!!! Can not wait to get confirmation – I will need the kiddy slopes too.
We dont ski, but its good to know that safety must come first to teach kids.
Maybe one day I’ll learn to do that with my kiddos
I use to ski all the time but as I have gotten older I have stopped it makes me nervous.
I do not like the idea of Skiing too scared of what might happen and i think i would rather not risk it.
That’s so interesting about the goggle gap. I never would have thought of that. I’m glad you mentioned it.
Skiing is a fabulous sport but can be dangerous too, so safety rules come first. My kid is still little for slopes but hope next year we are going to teach him.

I wish I could learn to ski! I tried it once and fell down. An elderly couple had to pick me up off the ground, lol! Still, it looks like so much fun!
We have never hit the slopes ever. Someday may be this year or next it will happen. Thanks for the info on SIA.
Ahh! It worked! LOL. I have not taken our children skiing yet, but this post has certainly helped me in becoming more prepared to do so. I didn’t realize all of the precautions necessary, but now I am definitely feeling more educated on the resources available to us! 🙂 Thank you!
I use to know how to ski and enjoyed it. I haven’t introduced my son to skiing yet but think it’s a great family activity. Before we hit the slopes I’ll make sure he takes an into class. Along with me. I need a refresher. LOL
None of us have every been skiing. Our daughter is adventurous, though, so she might try it one day. 🙂
We start teaching our boys to ski when they turn 4 and we teach safety by example. But resources like these would be great for parents who aren’t as adept at being on the slopes.
What is that white stuff? Making sure kids get good instructions before they go on the mountain is paramount. Good resources.
