The story of Elf on the Shelf is simple:

The Elf on the Shelf® is a special scout elf sent from the North Pole to help Santa Claus manage his naughty and nice lists. When a family adopts an elf and gives it a name, the elf receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa Claus about all of the day’s adventures. Each morning, the elf returns to its family and perches in a different place to watch the fun. Children love to wake up and race around the house looking for their elf each morning.

There are two simple rules that every child knows when it comes to having an elf. First, an elf cannot be touched; Christmas magic is very fragile and if an elf is touched it may lose that magic and be unable to fly back to the North Pole. Second, an elf cannot speak or move while anyone in the house is awake! An elf’s job is to watch and listen.

  7. There aren’t that many places I can place an Elf on the Shelf but maybe on the refrigerator. That way he can watch the kids while they sneak in there at nights. 🙂

  8. This actually looks like fun! Of course I don’t have any children and my furbaby cat would bat it around if that elf DARED to sit on any shelf that she wanted to sit on!!

  9. Last year I started doing the elf on the shelf thing with my boys. I feel like I was a little late jumping on the band wagon, but they enjoyed it none the less. I had ours do all sorts of silly things every morning and the kids loved seeing what he got into over night!

  40. Karen Presley Dawkins says

My favorite holiday tradition? So hard to choose!!! Probably my favorite is the book gift we give each year. My husband and I have a date day to shop at our local bookstore (I do some recon online beforehand). We select a book for each of our kids that signifies something of their year: becoming a big brother, starting dance lessons, learning how to read… Inside the front cover, we each write a personal note to the kids. The older two (19 and 16 this year) consider their book the best gift of the year. They open the book and quietly read their notes, a couple times tearing up! I will continue this with my grandkids (one day — not too soon!).
