Celebrate The Real Spirit Of The Holidays! #JCPenneyLatino #RealLatinoHolidays @JCpenney #Ad

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with Latina Mom Bloggers and JCPenney.  However, all opinions expressed are my own.

My Dad and six of his eight grandsons on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving has always been a very important holiday in our family.  Although it is a holiday that we adopted here in the United States, it has become a special day for family bonding.  Since I was a child, we would all get together at my grandmother’s house and spend time with one another being thankful for all of the blessings that were bestowed upon our family that year.  The food that we shared and the unity that we felt made it one of the most important days of the year and I have carried those feelings into adulthood.

Nowadays, my siblings and I carry on the Thanksgiving traditions that we learned as kids.  Every year, we get together with our own children and we break bread together.  The best part is that we still prepare a lot of the dishes that our grandmother used to make all of those years ago.  One of the recipes that she was most well known for was her famous stuffing.  Everyone in the family has always  loved it and eating it on Thanksgiving reminds us of her and how much we have always loved her.

Carrying on Grandma’s legacy by spending family time together during the holidays.

Although Grandma passed away years ago, one of the legacies that she passed down to me was teaching me her stuffing recipe when I was a teenager.  As a result, I can now prepare it for the rest of my family every year for Thanksgiving and the taste of it catapults us all right back to our childhood and we are overcome with all of those great memories from the past.

My mother likes to say that the taste of it is identical to my grandmother’s stuffing through the years.  This is a tremendous compliment and one that fills me with all of the good feelings of love and family that Thanksgiving and the holidays are all about. After all, what would the holidays be without having the opportunity to spend them with those who truly matter the most to us in our lives?

JCPenney Latino is here to help families find the things that make their holidays special.  As part of their ongoing commitment to celebrating Latino family traditions, they want to share the spirit of Thanksgiving and Christmas with Latinos all over this country.  It is that REAL SPIRIT that lives in the hearts and minds of Latino homes in the U.S. that they are capturing through the stories of Latino children and their families.

JCPenney has chosen real choir singer, boys and girls, to be part of the JCPenney choir and help tell the stories of their multicultural families and how they experience holidays in the US.  This is the story of the children’s choir from their holiday campaign:

Make sure you like JCPenney Latino on Facebook to share your favorite family traditions and to share what the real holidays are like for Latinos through stories by Latino children and their families!

Let’s Discuss:  What do you think of the JCPenney Thanksgiving themed video above?  What are some important real holiday traditions in your home?

  1. My mom does the cooking, but everyone helps in the kitchen when we get to her house, and all the girls clean up. We like to sit at the table for hours after eating just chatting.
    Thank you!

  2. I entered the Purex giveaway

  3. Thanksgiving has always been a day of gathering together to give thanks for each other and of course to eat! I really do not remember any special foods–only a lot of it!!

  4. We each go around the table and are given our turn to say what we are thankful for. We also get to the chance to stay what we admire about each person at the dinner table. There is lots of laughs and tears.

  5. amanda ripsam says

that’s a lot of kids. Good luck on your give away. I don’t shop at jc penny or I would enter.

  6. My family has a tradition of playing games on Thanksgiving, along with watching football. Among our favorites are Yahtzee and Scrabble. I always win at Srcabble. I’m pretty ruthless when it comes to games.

  7. Charro Mojica says

We all eat together as a family. Then we skype my son who is overseas in Japan. After that we get our game plan on for Black Friday shopping while we eat mom’s pumpkin pie. As soon as it gets dark out we drive around the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights that get turned on. Love spending time with family! 🙂

  8. It’s always a fun day full of good food, good memories and a lot of laughter. We always include pasteles even though that’s more of a Christmas dish. This year we’re playing football as a family and starting a new tradition!

  9. We all gather together at one of the in-laws home and we remember the good old days. We give thanks and thank about plans for the Christmas and make new memories. Since everyone is grown up it is great to see them together for at least a couple hours.

  10. Wanda McHenry says

We always take extra special care to have all the food cooked to perfection on Thanksgiving. We do this so we can reflect how blessed we are and truly give thanks for our family and what we do have.

  11. Wanda McHenry says

  12. I don’t know that we have any recognized traditions, but we certainly have ‘holiday habits’. 🙂 we always enjoy

    • Friendly discussion and debate during dinner, football and naps after dinner, and sometimes a game or two. We also always watch the parade and dog show in the morning while we prepare dishes. It’s the together time that matters!

  13. Teresa McCluskey says

For me Thanksgiving we always play some card games while the kids play dolls and action figures. Then a big family dinner and a really good movie topped off with a few drinks and a full belly! Dont forget a little drama and something burnt!

  14. It’s funny because now that I have my own kids, I find it easier to host Thanksgiving at my house and have everyone come to me (instead of dragging the kids out) and I prepare the EXACT same meal as my mother always did. I use her recipes and make things exactly the way she taught me. I wouldn’t want it any other way, either 🙂

  15. Janet Watson says

We always eat at my brother in laws house. His wife has a huge family that gathers with us, too, every year. We all bring a dish, but she cooks the turkey. I always help my sister in law get all of the food lined up on the buffet line.

  16. My family gets together with my parents, and the six of us cook together while we talk. We play games, and starting last year added a round of disc golf to our activities. Unfortunately, someone always has to work early the next day, so we wrap things up in the early evening, having enjoyed a full day together.

  17. We always go around the table and share what each of us is thankful for. After we’ve eaten and cleaned up, we put up the Christmas tree and decorate it.

  18. Dawn Spatulas On Parade says

What a blessings to have a large family and enjoy getting together. I grew up with that and miss it. The family gatherings, I’m an only child and I loved seeing all my cousins. Look at all the boys! I have all boys so this made me smile. and I love JCP

  19. scentednights2002 says

About our only tradition is that my Mom and I prepare the meal. I guess we don’t have a lot of traditions.

  20. We take the time to express what we are each thankful for, relive some family memories and play board games. Its such an important time to cherish!

  21. Denise Taylor-Dennis says

We pray before our meal and thank God for how he takes care of us. We are trying to do this at every meal. During the Thanksgiving meal we talk about what we are thankful for.

  22. Denise Taylor-Dennis says

I entered the Elf on a Shelf giveaway.

  23. Onica {MommyFactor} says

It’s nice that such a large company is doing this for latino families.

  24. We live 2,000 miles away from our extended family and are not able to go back home at Thanksgiving time. So, we do our own thing. I always cook a big meal, even thought there is just the four of us and we just spend good family time together. We watch football on that day and we usually all watch a movie together in the evening.

  25. We always cook the meal together so that we all put in work towards the meal and not just one person. We also always say what we are thankful for before eating.

    kport207 at gmail dot com

  26. Amanda Rauch says

I always make my homemade stuffing. My boys don’t really like turkey that much, so every year we decided what we will have instead. One year we had a TurDuckHen. It was interesting, but we will not be having that again! It is fun to see what they come up with for ideas!!

  27. We have the whole family together, even those from out of town, that’s my favorite tradition. My mother in law cooks a huge dinner, complete with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, and green bean casserole. And we watch football!

  28. We get together with all the in-laws and their families and it’s a lot of people. We spend the day eating (lots of it), playing games and just hanging out. It’s not easy to get so many people together at the same time, but on Thanksgiving everyone makes the effort. We make sure there is enough food for everyone to take leftovers home. I always keep the bones to make turkey broth and it’s delicious!

  29. JadeLouise Designs says

For us the important things is that we are together. No matter which family we are visiting; there is always games and movie watching and a lot of visiting. It is so important that we have time to visit and enjoy our company.

  30. Grandma Bonnie says

We always share a meal and even if we can not be together because of distance we share part of the day on Skype with all our family. That is so awesome of JCPennys to create such holiday spirit.

  31. The real meaning of Thanksgiving is the family getting together. We do have all of the traditional Thanksgiving foods like turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, but what is really important is that we sit at the table together as a family and are thankful for being with each other.

  32. Lovely giveaway – we don’t celebrate Thanks Giving here but I do love spending time with my family as they are so important to me x

  33. We always make sure there is pumpkin pie after the meal and a parade while the meal is looking. This year is the first my little family will be separate from extended family, but we’ll make due.

  34. Well I would say we don’t have a particular tradition other than we usually go to my parents house, I make the Sweet Potato Casserole, and my Mom and Sisters take care of other dishes. Grandma usually makes the gravy every year. Otherwise the cousins play and the guys watch football. 🙂

  35. Like many other families, we get together at Thanksgiving and everyone makes special dishes to celebrate the holiday. We enjoy the opportunity to spend time together and take time to appreciate all the good things we have.

  36. That’s so awesome that you have done such a great job at replicating your grandmother’s recipe. I have a few of those recipes that my family has passed down, and the holidays just aren’t the same without them. It’s so cool how even the younger generations have the same idea as those who are older of what just “tastes like home.” 🙂

  37. Our holiday tradition is picking out a live Christmas tree after our family Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving is really important at our house too!

  38. I love how your grandmother taught you how to make her stuffing. It is so special when we can keep something going as a tradition that we have been taught so we can continually hand it down to others in the family.

  39. Jennifer Williams says

Our holiday tradition is keeping Christmas out of the house until the day after Thanksgiving, we love to have the feeling that they are separate holidays. I wish my grandmother would have been able to teach me things like yours did, what a great thing to have shared with her.

Our tradition is getting up together to make the stuffing. MOst ofour traditions involve making and eating the food and games.

  48. The only tradition we have is eating on the china that my mom gave us as a wedding gift. I only get it out once a year.

  49. I am super envious that you are able to get together with so many family members. I have always wanted to be able to do that, but my family has always moved around a lot, so it was not possible. I am not sure if we have any Thanksgiving traditions. Christmas, yes, Thanksgiving, no.

  50. What special memories you have! My grandmother cracks me up in that she refuses to share recipes with us thinking they’re just not important. Over the years, though, we’ve gleened some of her secrets…always use real lard. That’s #1!

  51. Growing up we had Lithuanian stuffing because we are lithuanian. It has been a stuffing we enjoy every Thanksgiving. We also make chex mix every year too.

  52. Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell says

Several of us are in the retail field, so rarely do we have time to prepare for Thanksgiving, working long hours (and now even on Thanksgiving). Our tradition is to celebrate Thanksgiving and many holidays when we can schedule time together, not when the calendar says it’s a holiday. We typically spend the whole day together catching up, napping, watching football and, most importantly, EATING delicious foods.
