The holidays are coming and many of you are probably planning some road trips that will take you to the homes of friends or family members in order to spend this special time with them.  If you have children like we do, planning for a road trip can become a little more complicated.

After all, children do not have the patience that adults have when it comes to sitting in a car for hours.  As a result, parents have to get creative when it comes to making sure that their children are kept happy and content throughout the long ride.  Being that we have taken many road trips with our children, there are some special steps that we always take to make these rides run a lot more smoothly.

We have found that planning in advance for the music that we play in the car makes a world of difference.  Our boys love to sing along with Christmas Carrols and holiday music so we always pack a variety of CDs that they can sing along to throughout the ride.  This helps to get them into the holiday spirit and keeps their energy level up during the long hours sitting in the car.

Packing the kids’ favorite snacks can also go a long way in keeping them happy throughout the car ride.  We have found that healthier snacks like fruits and yogurts are better to take along with us.  Since they have to be refrigerated, we keep a small cooler in the car packed with ice.

It is easier to pack non-perishable snacks like chips and cookies, however, these are usually high in sugar and salt and will only energize the kids momentarily.  Once the sugar high wears off, you will have some cranky young passengers so it is better to give them snacks that will keep their energy level up consistently.

Lastly, we always pack the kids’ favorite activities.  During the holidays, we find that they love doing holiday crafts.  These usually include holiday coloring books, holiday stickers, and even holiday-themed books.  The kids love spending hours in the cars coloring and creating cards that they can even give away as gifts to their family members.  You would be surprised how long these activities will keep them entertained.

In the end, you will find that a little bit of planning will go a long way in keeping your children happy during your holiday road trip.  Making sure that they are entertained and happy will allow the adults in the vehicle to focus on driving and road safety.  This will keep everyone safe and happy so you can arrive at your destination and celebrate the holidays with your loved ones.
