One of my fondest memories of growing up in Spain are the precious moments that I spent with my Grandmother enjoying “La merienda” with her and talking to her about my day in school. The term “merienda” refers to a widely popular Latino custom. It involves taking a break in the afternoon and having a snack in between lunch and dinner. This is normally a bonding time where families enjoy a light meal as well as each other’s company.
The hours between lunch and dinner can seem like a really long time when your stomach is growling. La merienda definitely provides all of us with a solution to the problem of that afternoon craving. One way to spend this time is to enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate along with some sweet pastries and share them with a close friend or family member. It is wonderful to take a break and just “escape” for a few minutes.
Nestlé’s Abuelita Hot Chocolate is a perfect “merienda” snack because it comes in convenient, single-serve instant hot cocoa envelopes that dissolve in milk or water. You can also buy the granulated chocolate drink mix which comes in a resealable pouch, also for your snacking convenience. It is so wonderful to enjoy a hot mug of chocolate and pair it with some great company and great conversation. The best part is that this hot chocolate is absolutely rich and delicious!
Do you currently partake in a daily afternoon snack break or “merienda?” If so, what does your merienda look like and who do you share that time with every single day?
