One of my most memorable road trips took place when we drove across Spain to visit France.  As you can imagine, we were all very excited, after all, it’s not every day that one gets to drive across Europe.  Once we arrived at our destination we had a great time but the road trip itself was far from stellar.  There were many things that we could have done differently to make the trip itself a lot more comfortable and we definitely learned a few things about planning for road trips in the future.

First and foremost, we should have come up with a much better plan for having our meals.  Although we packed a few snacks, we were totally unprepared for how much food and drinks we would need throughout the ride.  As a result, we had to stop often to purchase food and this put a huge dent in our vacation budget.  Next time, we will spend the extra money buying a cooler which will keep everything cold and buy easy snacks and beverages to consume in the car without having to stop so often.

Having a good car definitely makes for a better road trip experience.  The car we used for our road trip was reliable mechanically but it was not large enough to accommodate all of the family members that we took on our trip.  My husband’s Kia Sorento would have been the perfect choice of vehicle for our trip.  With its third row seats, everyone in the vehicle would have been comfortable and it definitely would have put everyone in a much better mood throughout the 16 hour car trip.

Lastly, it’s important to be realistic about how taxing taking a long road trip can be on the driver.  We did not consider this and only had one person to drive the entire trip.  This caused us to have to make a lot more unnecessary stops in order to allow him to take some breaks from the road.  Not only was this difficult for the driver himself, but it also caused us to take a lot more time arriving at our destination.  Next time, we will include more drivers and draft a schedule for each driver in order to give everyone a chance to rest.

We would love to hear your advice for roadtrippers!  Let’s discuss, where was your best road trip destination and what will you do differently on your next road trip to make it more enjoyable for you and your family?
